What Is a TPI Screen?

A TPI screen shows exactly how your body is helping — or limiting — your golf swing. Here is what it is, what happens in one, and whether you need it.

If you have ever been told to "turn more," "stop sliding," or "use the ground" and your body just wouldn't do it, a TPI screen explains why. It is the starting point of every CoachZT program — and the piece most golfers have never had.

TPI, in one paragraph

TPI stands for the Titleist Performance Institute, the organization that has studied how the body and the golf swing work together more than anyone else. A TPI screen is a series of simple physical tests — a movement assessment — that reveals how well your body can do the things an efficient golf swing requires: rotate, stabilize, and produce force.

The body-swing connection

Every swing fault has two possible causes: you don't know how to make the move, or your body physically can't. A TPI screen tells you which. If your hips can't separate from your shoulders, no amount of "clear your hips" will fix it. The screen finds the physical limitation first, so your training — and your lessons — aim at the right target.

What a TPI screen actually measures

Each result connects to specific swing characteristics, so you leave knowing the physical reasons behind your patterns.

What happens in an assessment

This is the part most golfers never see described. In a CoachZT assessment, Zac walks you through the physical screens, explains what each result means for your swing, and then builds a training program around your specific restrictions. You don't get a generic workout — you get a plan aimed at the exact things holding your game back. It takes about an hour and gives you a clear roadmap forward.

Do you need one?

If you want to add distance, swing more efficiently, stop getting hurt, or finally make a lesson stick, yes. Juniors building an athletic base, competitive players chasing speed, and senior golfers protecting mobility all start here. You can be screened in person in Bloomington-Normal or remotely from anywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does TPI stand for?

TPI stands for the Titleist Performance Institute, which studies how the body and the golf swing work together and certifies coaches to screen and train golfers.

How long does a TPI screen take?

About an hour. You go through the physical screens, learn what each result means for your swing, and leave with a training plan built around your specific limitations.

Is a TPI screen the same as a golf lesson?

No. A lesson works on swing technique. A TPI screen assesses your body — the physical foundation under the swing — and guides the fitness training that supports your lessons.

Can a TPI screen be done online?

Yes. A guided version can be done remotely: you record the movements following instructions, and your coach evaluates them and builds your program from the results.

Who should get a TPI screen?

Any golfer who wants more distance, a more efficient swing, fewer injuries, or better results from lessons — from juniors to senior golfers.
